Graduation Requirements

Beginning academic year 2016-17, students must meet the following requirements in order to graduate from the MAIS program:


General Requirements
1. A minimum of 36 credits of graduate work beyond bachelor’s degree is required.
2. The student must have a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.0 in those courses to be credited towards the MAIS degree.
3. No more than 6.0 credits of independent study may be included in the MAIS program.
4. To maintain full-time status in the RGS, students must register for 9.0 credits per semester. Part-time students must complete at least 6 credits per academic year.
5. The following courses are the core courses of the program and all students must include them in their program of study:
• MAIS 620 Theory and Method for the Study of Religion
• MAIS 621 The Qur’an and Its Interpretation
• MAIS 622 History of Islamic Thought and Literature
6. The minimum passing grade for the three core courses of the program is 2.7 (B-). Any student scoring below this grade must repeat the course.
7. Late in the first semester, students must fill out a preliminary program of study and choose either the Academic Track or the Professional Track for the rest of their study.

The Academic Track
1. The following courses are required for the Academic Track:
• MAIS 623 Islamic Theology and Philosophy
• MAIS 625 Islamic Law and Legal Theories
• MAIS 626 Hadith
• MAIS 629 Arabic I: Foundations of Qur’anic Arabic

2. Students in the Academic Track are required to write a Master’s thesis, which corresponds to 6.0 credit hours. The procedure of writing a Master’s thesis may be found in the Student Handbook.

The Professional Track
1. The following courses are required for the Professional Track:
• MAIS 625 Islamic Law and Legal Theories
• MAIS 628 Skills for Islamic Ministry
• MAIS 629 Arabic I: Foundations of Qur’anic Arabic
• MAIS 637 Recitation and Memorization of the Qur’an
2. Students in the Professional Track are required to take one unit of CPE (Clinical Pastoral Education) from any accredited institution. One unit of CPE corresponds to 3.0 credit hours.
3. Students in the Professional Track have the option of including a Master’s thesis in their program, which corresponds to 6.0 credit hours.

Exemptions
Students can be exempt from the courses of Arabic I: Foundations of Qur’anic Arabic and Recitation and Memorization of the Qur’an if they pass the competency exam. The procedure of the competency exams may be found in the Student Handbook.

Transfer of Credits
1. A maximum of 9.0 transfer credits of graduate coursework related to the field of Islamic Studies taken at another institution with a grade of B- or better may be included in the MAIS program.

2. A maximum of 12.0 credits taken at RGS before the semester of admission may be included in the MAIS program provided the student has scored a grade of B- or better.

Graduation
Early in a student’s final semester, the Program of Study must be submitted. A Diploma Request Card must also be submitted at that time.
