MAIS-629 Arabic I: Foundations of Qur’anic Arabic

This course will enable the student to read the Qur’an and classical texts by providing the tools that unlock the Arabic language – morphology (the study of the word), grammar (the study of the sentence), and lexicography (the relationship of words to meanings). By accessing the basic structure of the word –the trilateral root– students can then go on to deciphering meanings based upon standard structures associated with the addition of “extra” letters to the trilateral root. This classic style of learning has served students of Arabic in the traditional curriculum, and continues to do so in contemporary times.
