Assistant Professor of Islamic Studies and Librarian

Respect Graduate School seeks a dynamic assistant professor of Islamic Studies who has the skills and abilities needed to manage the RGS Library.

Education and Skills Required

  1. Earned Ph.D. in Islamic Studies or related field.
  2. MLS or MLIS
  3. Demonstrated graduate level research, teaching, and academic writing skills
  4. Ability to support students through their research and writing assignments, including their Final Research Paper, by offering research and academic writing workshops throughout the academic year.
  5. Native-like English proficiency oral and written.
  6. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  7. Knowledge and experience with start-up institutions
  8. Knowledge and experience with mentorship
  9. Ability to multi-task
  10. Reading knowledge of Turkish and Arabic
  11. Strong educational technology background
  12. Exceptional work ethic

Teaching Responsibilities

The assistant professor shall teach two (2) courses in the Master of Arts in Islamic Studies program per academic year, each carrying three (3) credit hours. The assistant professor may be asked to teach continuing education courses equivalent in workload of two (2) MAIS program courses or may be assigned administrative duties by the school administration.

Research & Publication

The Faculty Member is expected to maintain an active scholarly profile by:

  • Publishing one (1) peer-reviewed academic journal article per year.
  • Delivering at least one (1) academic conference presentation per year in their field of expertise.
  • Engaging in ongoing research projects that contribute to the mission and academic reputation of RGS.

Committee Participation & Service

The assistant professor will contribute to the shared governance and institutional development of the School by participating in assigned administrative teams.

Administrative Service

Based on availability from the full-time workload, the assistant professor may be assigned administrative duties by the President in library administration which include:

  1. Developing and managing the library’s print and digital collections in consultation with the deans and faculty.
  2. Supporting the research needs of graduate students in Islamic Studies, including assisting students with the formatting and submission of master’s final research papers
  3. Assisting students and other library users in accessing and using the RGS library system.
  4. Cataloging new acquisitions using Populi ILMS and Dublin Core metadata standards.
  5. Presenting workshops on information literacy, library resources, and research and writing skills.
  6. Developing programs and activities that promote library services and increase awareness of library resources.
  7. Assessing library needs; prepare an annual budget proposal each March; administer the library budget; and place orders for materials and resources.
  8. Training and supervising graduate assistants in circulation and reference services.
  9. Staying current with developments in academic library technologies and services; recommend improvements; and manage vendor relationships and contracts.
  10. Preparing monthly and annual reports on acquisitions, library usage, and library activities.
  11. Reviewing library policies and procedures annually and recommend revisions as needed.
  12. Collaborating with faculty to maintain course reserves.
  13. Evaluating the collection on an ongoing basis to ensure that library resources remain current and support curricular and research needs.
  14. Engaging in professional development through conferences, workshops, courses, and participation in professional associations.
  15. Providing tours of the RGS library as needed.
  16. Performing other duties as assigned.
