‘Ulum al-Qur’an
The aim of this course is to familiarize students with both classical and contemporary Muslim exegetical approaches to the Qur’an. The course will first provide the students with the foundational knowledge of classical exegetical “sciences,” then it will proceed to discuss modern approaches to questions regarding the provenance, nature, compilation, canonization, and interpretation of the Qur’an. Specific attention will be given throughout the course to the major textual resources available for the Qur’anic study, including the classical and contemporary Muslim commentary literature.
