Dr. Akbar Keshodkar is a professor of Anthropology at Moravian University, with degrees in Biology, Chemistry, Islamic Studies, and Anthropology from Oberlin College, The Institute of Ismaili Studies, and Oxford University. His research focuses on how transnational socio-economic networks shape mobility and identity in Muslim communities across the Indian Ocean, as well as the resilience of marginalized communities impacted by tourism. He is the author of ‘Tourism and Social Change in Post-Socialist Zanzibar’ and has published extensively on social mobility, belonging, and globalization. He will discuss how his background in Islamic studies informs his anthropological analysis of identity in Muslim societies.
