This course consists of weekly seminars focused on the developing learners who are, or aim to be, involved in caring for others on a spiritual basis.

For Whom?

The course is designed for four groups of learners:

Persons in the Clinical Pastoral Education program

Persons who may need a 1 or 2 hour Continuing Education credit for their present position

Persons who may want to attend the full 16 weeks for college credit

Persons who are presently involved in their community, Mosque, Synagogue, or Church and desire to expand their expertise

What

The Monday evening course consists of conceptual presentations on various topics (listed below) dealing with physical, mental, emotional, and/or spiritual distress.

How

The lecture presentation is approximately 1 hour in length leaving room for about30 minutes for questions and discussion.

Writings

Several small writing assignments designed for the learner to gain Self-Insight as a basis for Other-Insight.

Focus

The main focus of the course is a working education to develop the Individual Character of the learner, rather than to Only be an academic presentation. 3 Foci: Learn about Self, Learn about Others, Learn about Represent Character of Deity to those around- especially those in trauma.

Week-3: Understanding Self as most important tool you have- Life map/ Spiritual Journey

Week-4: Listening – HURIER Model and Validation

Week-5: Listening – Validation and Listener Responses

Week-6: No Class – July 4

Week-7: Understanding Others – Human Natures

Week-8: Intro to Theological Reflection and spiritual assessment

Week-9: Intro to Trauma, Grief and Suicide

Week-10: Intro to hospital ministry (etc)

Week-11: Pastoral Interventions

Week-12: (cont) Pastoral Interventions

Week-13: Mental Illness

Week-14: Caring for Self, Self-Assertiveness

Week-15: No Class – Labor Day Holiday

Week-16: Self Evaluations

About the Instructor

Dr. Ron Cockroft is a Diplomate in Pastoral Counseling and Pastoral Education/Training with CPSP. Dr. Cockroft is also a retired Chaplain Director and the former Director of Spiritual Care at Austin State Hospital. Ron had been at Austin State Hospital since January 2002. He has served hospitals in Bryan Texas, San Antonio Texas, and Lubbock Texas, before coming to Austin. Ron also served and retired as a U.S. Army and Army National Guard Chaplain for more than 25 years. Chaplain Ron obtained his Master of Divinity from the Golden Gate Baptist Seminary in Mill Valley, CA; an MA in Linguistics from the University of Texas Arlington, and an M.S. and a Ph.D. in Psychology from Texas A&M University. Ron is a member of the Alamo Chapter of CPSP, and is currently president of the board of non-profit Focus Girls 4 Education Runner’s Pal. Chaplain Ron is a Licensed Professional Counselor-Supervisor.
